Have a Kit
Make sure your household, car, and workplace are prepared for any potential hazard.
HOME:
- 1 gallon of water per day for every person and pet
 - Non-perishable food - make sure you choose things your family will actually want to eat. Spam last forever, but it's of no use if everyone hates it.
 - Lighting: Flashlights are great, make sure you have fresh batteries. Headlamps are better, you can still use both hands. Solar garden lights work well and are much safer than candles.
 - Change of clothes, closed toed shoes, leather gloves, rain gear for each person
 - Blankets
 - First Aid Kit, prescription medications, contact lens solutions, extra glasses
 - Spark-free wrench to turn off natural gas, if applicable
 - Phone chargers
 - Kids' and pets' toys and snacks
 - Manual can opener
 - Local maps on paper
 - Dust masks
 - Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter in place
 - Moist towelettes, garbage bags, and twist-ties for personal sanitation
 - Copies of important documents: passport, drivers license, deed, lease, marriage license, divorce decree and custody agreement, adoption papers, powers of attorney
 - Copies of credit cards, list of bills, account numbers and when payments are due

EVACUATION: If you must evacuate-take your pets with you!
Place all in a backpack or other portable bag. These items will help if you have to shelter in place as well, so there is some overlap of the lists.
