City Council Accepts Wastewater Collection System Master Plan

Midwest City, OK – At the August 12 Special City Council Meeting, Public Works leadership and consultant Freese and Nichols, Inc. presented a completed Wastewater Collection System Master Plan for Midwest City. The plan is a comprehensive look at Midwest City’s sanitary sewer system and lift station infrastructure, providing phased approaches for improvements as far out as 20 years. The Council accepted the master plan, a more than 440-page document encompassing approximately 292 miles of sewer lines and 16 lift stations within a 22.1 square mile service area.

“This is the culmination of several years of effort that will help us make informed decisions about our sewer collection system,” says Public Works Director R. Paul Streets. “This plan will help us make decisions about areas where we need to invest money because those areas are in need of reinvestment and recapitalization.”

Based on analysis of current cost standards, the 20-year phased plan totals more than $171 million in reinvestment in Midwest City’s wastewater collection system, with the first 2-year phase detailing more than $18 million in initial reinvestment. This plan accompanies a comprehensive study of the Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF) that is currently underway, establishing a basis for designing, constructing, and financing the future wastewater collection needs of our community.

“This is a great place to start,” says Assistant Public Works Director Carrie Evenson. “Capacity is one component of our aging system, rehabilitation and replacement are the partner pieces. We will use this plan to make sure our collection system improves and provides the level of service to our customers that we need it to, over the next 20 years.”
