FIRE PREVENTION & COMMUNITY RISK REDUCTION

Our Mission

The Midwest City Fire Prevention Division is dedicated to protecting life and property through proactive risk reduction, code enforcement, education, and community partnerships. We strive to serve our community with pride through prevention, preparedness, and response.

What is Community Risk Reduction?

Community Risk Reduction (CRR) is a proactive approach that identifies, prioritizes, and addresses risks, threats, and hazards in our community before they lead to emergencies. At Midwest City Fire Department, we implement this comprehensive strategy through the "5 E's": Enforcement, Engineering, Emergency Response, Economic Incentive, and Education.

Our data-driven program helps us determine where resources will have the greatest impact, creating safer neighborhoods and businesses throughout Midwest City.

Our Services

Code Enforcement & Inspections

Our certified inspectors work collaboratively with business owners to identify and correct potential fire hazards. These inspections are educational opportunities that help ensure compliance with the 2018 International Fire Code while providing practical solutions to common violations. We're here to help, not just enforce.

Plan Review & Engineering

Our Fire Protection Engineers review construction plans and fire protection systems to ensure buildings are designed with safety in mind from the ground up. This process streamlines development while maintaining rigorous safety standards. We offer pre-application consultations to help your project succeed.

Public Education

Our education specialists develop targeted programs for all segments of our community, from elementary students to seniors. Programs include:

  • Fire safety for schools and youth organizations
  • Home safety checks and smoke alarm installation
  • Cooking safety for college students and apartments
  • Fire extinguisher training for businesses
  • Senior fire safety programs
  • CPR and first aid training

Fire Investigation

Our investigators determine the origin and cause of fires to identify trends and develop prevention strategies. This data collection is crucial for our evidence-based approach to community risk reduction.

Community Partnerships

The Midwest City Fire Department has developed innovative programs that extend beyond traditional emergency response to address the root causes of emergencies while improving quality of life for our most vulnerable citizens.

Community Risk Reduction Initiative

Our data-driven approach transforms how we serve Midwest City residents:

  • Early Identification: We monitor emergency call patterns to identify addresses that may benefit from additional support
  • Home Safety Assessments: We conduct comprehensive visits that address fire safety, fall risks, and medical needs
  • Resource Coordination: We connect residents with appropriate community services before emergencies occur

Analysis of over 6,700 emergency responses in 2024 revealed that 80% of our call volume consists of medical emergencies. Through our collaborative approach, we've achieved a remarkable 90% reduction in repeat emergency calls among program participants, creating a safer community while ensuring emergency resources remain available for critical incidents.

Special Needs Alert & Identification Program

Our S.A.Id. Program ensures first responders have critical information about individuals with special needs:

  • Who It Serves: Individuals with physical, developmental, behavioral, or emotional conditions
  • How It Works: Creates secure alerts that notify first responders before arriving on scene
  • Privacy Protection: Information is confidential and not broadcast over radio systems
  • Enhanced Safety: Enables more appropriate, dignified, and effective emergency response

Success Stories

Our approach has demonstrated measurable results. Enhanced code enforcement and interdepartmental collaboration at the Ridge Apartments resulted in a 24% reduction in emergency calls and significant improvements in both building safety and neighborhood crime statistics.
