Midwest City Neighborhoods in Action Midwest City Neighborhoods in Action Office opened its new offices at 9233 NE 10th Street on December 18, 2006. The new office location will house Midwest City’s Weed and Seed Program, allowing the City to bring in needed services for community residents in a five square mile target area. The area creates a “T” and includes the area between N.E. 10th Street and N.E. 23rd Street from Air Depot to Post Road, and the area between N.E. 10th Street and S.E. 15th Street from Midwest Boulevard to Douglas Blvd. The Weed and Seed Program is funded through a grant from the United States Department of Justice (USDOJ), Community Capacity Development Office. The Programs Steering Committee is chaired by John Richter, United States Attorney, Western District of Oklahoma and Vice Chaired by Guy Henson, City Manager, City of Midwest City. Weed refers to Law Enforcement and Community Policing, Seed refers to Prevention, Intervention, Treatment and Neighborhood Restoration. The Police Department, under the leadership of Police Chief, Brandon Clabes, has implemented Project CARE, (Criminal Activity Reduction Effort), which is a police patrol overtime program consisting of 1 to 2, two-man patrol units, interacting with the public and actively patrolling/working identified high crime areas at various times during the week and weekends. The Police Department also has four Community Action Officers to address the Community Policing effort. These four officers attend and participate in numerous neighborhood association meetings as well as provide a variety of police related educational awareness topics to the public. The Police Department also provides Student Anti-Violence Education (SAVE) to Crutcho, Willowbrook, Telstar, and Steed Elementary schools within the above listed area. The program is geared toward fifth grade students and emphasizes peer pressure, respect, discipline, and drug/gang awareness. Midwest City’s Seed effort, under the leadership of Weed and Seed Coordinator, Tom Bridgett, has made contacts with several agencies in an attempt to secure partnership and services to the community with the City. The Oklahoma Department of Health is on board and will begin providing free immunizations to children age 6 months through 18 years of age every third Wednesday between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. out of the site location, 9233 N.E 10th Street. Negotiations are still underway with the Department of Corrections for a check-in site for female resident caseloads. Several programs have been implemented thus far such as, a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, which provides free income tax assistance to low and moderate income families to increase the use of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit. Tax season is over and the program was a great success, a total of 320 returns were completed for citizens within the community and we are looking forward to serving you again next year. The Student Homework Assistance Program is also doing well. Volunteer tutors give freely of their time to assist children with there homework on Tuesdays and Thursdays out of the Weed and Seed Site. A Juvenile Community Service Program, which mandates that juveniles referred to the Weed and Seed Program from the City’s Juvenile Probation Office work within the community on business/building maintenance projects and neighborhood clean-up assignments. These same juveniles will be participating in the upcoming community summer lawn service program, assisting identified senior citizens with their lawn care maintenance. The Martial Arts Program, which targets 5th and 6th graders at Crutcho and Telstar Elementary schools, emphasizes discipline, respect, and peer pressure mentoring. Parent Resource/Job Placement at Telstar Elementary is a program in which the City has partnered with Telstar Elementary to bring to residents a Parent Technology and Resource Training Program. The program assists parents with basic computer skills. It also assists parents with accessing the school’s online grade book, e-mail to teachers, and student attendance records. Parents receive training on internet job search, creating professional resumes, utilizing the computer for enrolling in higher education courses, and preparing for G.E.D. entrance exams. A target date of June 1, 2007 has been set for future G.E.D. certification classes to be held at the site. The Weed and Seed office is currently negotiating partnership with Mid-Del Schools to provide this service out of the site location. If you would like to participate in any of the listed programs, please call the Midwest City Weed and Seed Office at 736-1973.
