The Midwest City Animal Shelter has been in operation since September 1986. We patrol Midwest City in an effort to impound animals that are unrestrained within our community. Our department investigates all complaints, and an officer is on call at all times for animal bites and injured animals.
Our staff works with the public on a daily basis. One of our main priorities is to keep our facility as clean as possible at all times. We believe the public deserves an animal shelter they can visit without viewing overcrowded and filthy kennels. We strive to adopt and redeem as many animals as possible. We utilize different pet organizations such as Pets & People and many different breed rescue groups in an effort to place many animals that would otherwise be euthanized. The Animals Best Friends Foundation has been working with the Animal Welfare Dept since 2005. They go out with the Adoption Trailer to each Adoption Fair and also scholarship pet adoptions from their own funds and assist the Animal Control Officers in any way they can.
We provide citizens with protection from sick/injured, nuisance, and vicious animals with an emphasis placed on customer service. Animal Welfare also assists other departments within the City to alleviate problems they may encounter while performing their duties.
Our shelter is currently contracted with seven (7) outlying towns to house their animals. We also have agreements with Tinker Air Force Base, the City of Spencer, and the Town of Forest Park in which we perform animal control services.
For the first time we will be displaying our animals via the World Wide Web, on the City's web site. We are optimistic that our adoptions and redemptions will increase due to this effort.
